We’ve been seriously collecting board games for more than a couple of years at this point here at Shelfside. Our current combined collection would be really quite shocking to our high school selves, and we wanted to depict the fun progression of how it’s like to start collecting board games.

There was a time where Cards Against Humanity and Monopoly dominated the conversation, and for quite some years at that. As we got older, like many others, Catan was one of the first games that just utterly gripped our attention, and down the rabbit hole we went. Like really, the Gamecube thing I talk about in this video hits home for our friend group. Target and Barnes and Noble were our go-to as we picked up games like Pandemic, Betrayal at House on the Hill, and we’re sure that the party game Throw Throw Burrito would be a grab if it was around at the time. Of course, spending money on board games is way too tempting and has led to some unopened games. And some games are just expensive, like Food Chain Magnate, Frosthaven/Gloomhaven, and Caverna. This video wouldn’t be complete with the behemoth TI3 and the new TI4 as well, which come a little later down the line in the journey. We have yet ourselves to hit the highest level in this video, and that is for sure a personal goal of ours.

This video idea was suggested by Clifford H, one of our Chad tier Patrons!

  1. Started this hobby this spring and now im somewhere between 4-5. Atleast i borrow mostly games at library instead of buying because of broken ass student

  2. I have around 50 ish games now…only played about 3 of them 😂

  3. My wife doesn't even ask me any more how much I've spent on Kingdom Death. Honestly, I'm afraid to look and find out as well. 😅

  4. Wait you missed a level when you buy etsy products that cost more than the original game itself. Just spent $120 on rock terrain and jumps for Thunder Road Vedetta. Painting it as we speak.

  5. You discovered Kickstarter

    You bought a Kallax

You watched 50 videos on how to build a board game table, but decided to spend all your money on more games instead.

    You discovered miniature painting

Your miniature painting pile of shame now has over 1000 unpainted minis

You’ve decided to focus on solo board games, because none of your friends are as committed as you.

  6. I am currently transitioning from level 4 to level 5.

  7. Honestly surprised at how many peoples first non-Monopoly/chess board game was catan. I played board games for 10 years without playing catan and a friend urged me to play it with them, and i also played it with my parents twice. I didn't really enjoy those experiences but i enjoyed playing with AIs. After those 3 games though we never played catan again

  8. Awesome video! A classic.

  9. I'm level 6 because i havent played with my board games enough

  10. Spot on! I have a bunch of sealed games that I admire on my shelf.😅

  11. love love the video. currently on stage 4.5 : selling games and buying more games.

  12. We are in the 4-7 stage. Just passed 150 games on our shelf 😂 definitely have a problem haha.

I’m really interested in TI4, and I heard it’s going to BGA soon – Michael

  13. Umbrella: I only buy board games when I'm having a bad day

  14. I’m at around stage 6. I will get only a small number a year now. This past year it was 4. 1 remake of my favorite game, 1 remake/collectors edition of a game I love, and 2 games that have been around for years that I haven’t played, but could look into to see if I would like them.

Mostly though, I am just looking to play what I do have. I got a good collection and don’t need to do the cult of new thing.

I think we have passed the golden age of Board gaming. Not saying board games have gotten bad or that they have stopped improving, but just that now the hobby has splintered due to the number of releases and the catalogue of “Classic hobby games” That already exists.

We are in the age of abundance in the hobby.

  15. Thank you for the video

  16. I'm at lvl 3. Buy buy buy. No one to play with. But who cares I love the smell of cardboard haha

  17. This comment is way late buuttt I literally went to a bargain store yesterday with my family (wife and 2 kids) and spent $450 on board games. I justify it by telling my wife, "Its ok honey! Its technically for the family since I can't play them alone!" I now have brought my total of board games from 90 to a grand total of 115 games on my board game shelf. I miigghhhtt have a problem. I'm not completely sure yet..

  18. Love this video, on my way to impulse buy The Vale of Eternity :p Guess what stage I'm in ahah

  19. Level 5 or 6… with a periodic relapse to Level 4.

  20. Hahaha! I can relate. My friend and I are saying we really want to go to Noble Knight again!

  21. When you're buying games and not playing them at least a dozen times before you buy the next one you should know you've got a problem. That said this is more a consumerism problem than a boardgame problem. For example, my sister-in-law doesn't play games at all, but she compulsively buys gadgets then lets them gather dust and throws them out or sticks them in storage after hardly using them, a friend obsessively buys tattoos and has spent thousands on them while going without bare necessities. Ths compulsive seeks to satisy the expectation of obtaining an unattainable sense of identity through the accumulation of material possessions, but only ever finds a sense of quiet despair; A tragic symptom of our age.

  22. I think I’m at the BUY BUY BUY stage….80 games in 2 months to start my collection. Then again, I did some pretty steep research and YouTube rabbit hole before I committed, so I feel like I know what I’m doing. I’m curating as I buy. Only a small handful of what I’ve gotten, has ended up on the trades/sale pile. And then I got to I wanted, for them. I think I’m doing OK…ha ha

  23. So the BUY BUY BUY phase eventually go away? Really hope so haha I have 7 games on their way to me as I comment this -.-

  24. LOL! @2:14 I’m literally looking over at my board game stand/shelf, and it’s the Exact same one.

  25. I was a 3, well on my way to becoming a 4, but then i slipped and fell into the TCG hole

  26. Stage 5 but I'm thinking of selling games that I don't play that much and someday I'll reach stage 6 😅
