He did it to himself. He bought the WORST properties in the game for way too much money up front. His strategy was trying to get houses up and hotels first which he did. But nobody lands on them statistically there are so many reasons why. But no, never ever ever buy brown in Monopoly and certainly don't spend that kind of money to buy them in trades.
Monopoly is known for like two things. One, games that never end when you play on an actual board. Two, destroying relationships. lol
